A doctor sees you first
Vethu is a traditional external therapy in Siddha medicine. Steam is applied either to one part of the body or to the whole of it, raised from medicinal herbs or therapeutic substances chosen by the Siddha physician for the condition being treated. Traditionally, the heat and the steam together are used to bring on perspiration and to loosen stiffness in the muscles and joints. It is not an ordinary steam bath. Ordinary steam is plain water, taken over the whole body for relaxation, usually unsupervised. Vethu may carry medicine, may be directed at a single painful or stiff area, and is given as a prescribed procedure under a Siddha physician or therapist. Which herbs are used, and in what quantity, is decided by a qualified Siddha physician according to the patient's condition.
Also called Svedam in Ayurveda, Vedhu in Siddha, Steam bath in Yoga & Naturopathy.
